The Gourd

Gourds are related to the family of cucumber, squash and pumpkin. Gourds take on the characteristics of wood after they dry. The best gourds are grown in warmer climates. I purchase most of my gourds from California.

The Process

Soak the gourd in warm water, scrub with choreboy (metal pot scrubber) and let dry thoroughly. I generally let the gourd’s shape determine the cut and design. Its character and color variation will guide you in the design process.  Start by doing the preliminary layout in pencil; when satisfied with the design, permanently burn in the images; when the burning process is complete, you are ready to apply any color; a variety of paints, stains, and dyes can be used. Let this process dry completely before applying the final finish; choose from a variety of high quality varnishes, which are available in different finishes.
